Club formation
Brian and Margaret Eldridge, who are dedicated
petanque players, moved to Chesterfield and
conceived the idea of a local Petanque club.
With the help of Chesterfield Council this was
achieved and the club was launched in 2013.
The public can play at any time on the Piste
outside club playing times - see separate
“Playing Times” as listed or can come along and
join with club members during the sessions they
hold throughout the year. The club have spare
sets of boules, the only equipment required, to
loan to anyone interested and club members
are on hand to give tips and guidance on the
play. It is the simplest game to understand and
has a history going back many centuries (see
History).
Petanque England has 16 regions and we are
in the Mercia region.
Holmebrook Valley Park
A large country park on the outskirts of
Chesterfield with a beautiful lake, which is home
to ducks, swans, coots and Canadian geese.
As well as the boules piste there are play areas
for children, cycle paths and footpaths through
and around the park popular with dog walkers
and cyclists, linking with the other cycle routes
around Chesterfield.
There are picnic tables at the Linacre road car
park and also at the lake and football pitches.
The boules piste can be used by all members of
the public for free at any time during the week.

Chesterfield Borough Council
In July 2011 Brian and Margaret Eldridge,
having moved to Chesterfield and being
enthusiastic petanque players for more than 12
years, suggested to Chesterfield Council that it
would be a good idea to set up a local Petanque
club as there was nothing like this in the
vicinity.
Their reasoning was that this was a sport that
can be enjoyed by every section of society, at
any age and including disabled players.
Chesterfield responded positively to the request
and set about creating a piste in the beautiful
surroundings of Holmebrook Valley Park, a
perfect location as it was right by the car park
and café.
The work was carried out during 2012 and the
Club was up and running by 2013.
We are very grateful for the support of
Chesterfield Council, without which the club
could never have been set up.
